Living on the West Bank has so many advantages. There is the fact that the West Bank is not the Central Business District, so there’s more opportunities to live in out-of-the-way communities with green spaces and family environments. Also, you have the benefit of living approximately 10 miles to the city of New Orleans, so if you work in the city, you can get there with some convenience. In some neighborhoods, the property and city taxes are lower than living in the city limits or suburbs of the city of New Orleans.
Now, West Bank homeowners have a new piece of news to celebrate – two new Mississippi River ferries have been funded by federal funding money of $25M! The money will be used to construct two new ferry boats to update and upgrade the ferry-riding experience for those who live across the river from New Orleans. The West Bank will enjoy one new ferry boat which will offer a ferry access point in Plaquemines Parish.
“Our ferries are an integral part of our rural network, and they provide essential services to the communities they reside in and businesses that rely on their dependable service,” said Shawn D. Wilson, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
Of the five ferries currently in service in Louisiana, the Plaquemines Ferry currently can transport 35 cars at a time. The new ferry will increase this capability and help the residents of the many communities in Belle Chasse have a comfortable way to work in the city of New Orleans. The expected completion date of the new ferry for Plaquemines Parish is some time in 2027.
