Spring and fall are always the times to focus on your home and its landscaping. Fall is a great time because plants are cheap, the weather is mild and vegetables are ready. Here are tips from professionals to keep your landscaping perfect during the fall season.
1. DIY a Compost Bin
You can’t go wrong with a compost bin because of all the fertilizer it can bring to the table for your plants. Fertilizer is a must to keep your yard looking good and your plants blooming. A great way to supply yourself a fertilizer treasure for free is to build a compost bin.
You can do this by using wood, galvanized steel mesh, and sheet metal. Make a 4 by 6 feet bin with two chambers. The first chamber will hold piled leaves and the second chamber will hold old trash scraps. Remember the side with trash will need a tight lid.
2. Beatify a Steep Slope With Retaining Walls
This can be a great DIY project and can stay within a low-budgeted project. Concrete blocks only cost around $2 a piece and are a great material for a retaining wall. Another great idea is to take plants and plant them along with slope to create a nice retaining wall.
During the fall there are sales on plants because nurseries are trying to clean out their inventory. Nurseries and gardeners will also be cutting their plants back during the fall. Ask for their offshoots that they are about to through away. This is another great way to grow a retaining wall.
3. Build an Edible Garden
This is a perfect way to have a fall garden. If you have a summer garden, pull the plants that are finished and are harvested. Once you have done this, remove all the weeds and add compost. Plant veggies such as broccoli, spinach, and cabbage grow and thrive in cold temps.
