Planning and preparation can help you keep costs down on almost any project or event that you have occurring. If you are thinking about purchasing a new home and moving, then here are some tips to follow to help you save money.
Start planning now
Hiring movers is a big part of your move, and this can be very expensive and time-consuming. You want to get at least three quotes from three different moving companies. When inquiring, have a list of your big items that they will need to move. More than likely you will be asked about your big items and an estimate of how many boxes you will have.
If you can, plan your move in the off-season which is October through May. If you have to move during the spring or summer, plan on moving on a weekday and in the middle of the month. Also, avoid any holidays. The best idea is to schedule the movers as soon as possible.
Tackle what you can yourself
DIY is always the cheaper way to go with any project. Moving loose items such as clothing, jewelry, precious toys, personal electronics and plants can save you money. Another money saver is to pack your boxes yourself instead of using the movers to pack. If you have kids, get them involved by asking them to tape the boxes and put the labels on the outside.
Packing up is a great way to declutter and purge items. If items are in good condition, donate them to a local charity. If you need some extra cash, take items to a consignment store or sell items on Facebook or Poshmark.
Prepare for the unexpected
There might be some surprise expenses along the way so be prepared. Do this by creating an emergency fund, keeping your homeowner’s insurance policy until closing and keeping utilities on until closing. A couple of months before your move, start to stash away extra cash.
Moving is an exciting time and can be stressful. To make the most of it, plan ahead and do your due diligence.
